Why is it so Windy?

Winds have been sustained out of the West, Northwest on Sunday from 25-35 mph with gusts as high as 50 mph. The reason why is because we had a low pressure system move through early New Year's morning.

As of Sunday afternoon that low pressure system was sitting over the Great Lakes while an area of High Pressure sat in the Central U.S. These two systems are rather strong and sitting fairly close together.

So the difference between the high and low pressure system is creating strong West, Northwestly winds and the Quad Cities are stuck right in the middle of the two.

You can tell the difference in pressure is rather strong by the solid white lines on the pressure map below (pressure values are in white given in inches of mercury). The closer the solid white lines are together, the stronger the pressure difference and the stronger the winds.
