Severe Weather Threat on Track...

The closer we get to the weekend, the more likely a severe weather outbreak looks for the QCA on Sunday. The Storm Prediction Center has the QC smack-dab in the middle of a Moderate Risk. The fact that we're still 48 hours away from Sunday afternoon means a couple things...

On the scary side: This high of confidence 2 days out means the risk is very serious.
On the bright side: There is still some time for the ingredients to change, let's hope they do!

Rain Arriving this Evening

It's looking more and more like some rain for the QC this evening. While there cold be a little bit of thunder and lightning too, most of us should see a steady, light to moderate, rain for a few hours this evening. We're still on track for a warm-up and thunderstorm chances this weekend.

A Stormy Monday...

After severe weather rolled through the QC Sunday night things got really bad in the Southeast Monday night into Tuesday. Here's a graphic from the Storm Prediction Center showing storm reports across the Southeast. There were more than 1200 reports of damaging/severe winds across several states. Many meteorologists have commented that this is one of the worst, most widespread wind events they can remember!

What A Difference A Day Makes!

On Sunday we saw our temperatures climb well into the 70s and lower 80s. In fact, we broke a record high yesterday of 80° that was set back in 1996. Officially in the Quad Cities we reached a high of 83° on Sunday, which set a new record for April 3rd! However, there was nothing record breaking about our temperatures on Monday. Our temperatures when compared to 24 hours ago are 20-33° cooler. The system that moved through yesterday was rather strong and is currently reaking havoc in parts of the Ohio Valley and in the Southeastern U.S. A nicer day is in store for Tuesday and even warmer temperatures will arrive for your Wednesday!

Hail in Colona, IL

A thank you goes out to Danny McDonald of Colona, IL for sending in a picture of hail from Sunday. The hail was an inch in diameter and it resulted from the severe thunderstorms that moved through our region on Sunday evening. There were several reports of large hail (hail reports are the green circles while yellow indicates reports of strong winds) across the area including hail up to the size of golf balls! Tornado Watch Until 12 AM

There is a tornado watch until 12am for all the counties shaded red. A watch means conditions are favorable for development, but severe weather is not occurring just yet. A warning means a tornado has been indicated by radar or by a trained spotter. A warning is when you take shelter. A watch is just to let you know that you should monitor the situation.

Sunday Severe Weather Update

Temperatures are climbing well into the 70s in some locations as expected with 60s north of the Quad Cities. We will likely see our temperatures continue to warm especially in locations that are seeing some sun this afternoon. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) still has our area under a slight risk for severe weather for today. The main threat will be large hail and strong, gusty winds. There is a possibility of an isolated tornado. The trend will be for mostly cloudy to partly cloudy skies for the remainder of this afternoon. The threat of showers and thunderstorms will increase later this evening as a cold front progresses eastward into our region. The cold front is currently located to our west in eastern Nebraska. 70s On The Way for Sunday!

It was a beautiful Saturday and temperatures made it into the upper 50s to lowers 60s for highs on Saturday! We will make it into the 70s for Sunday, but we will have a chance for scattered showers and thunderstorms. Some of these storms could be strong to even severe. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has our area under a slight risk for severe weather on Sunday. The main threats for these storms if they do become severe will be strong, gusty winds and hail. A thunderstorm is classified as severe when wind gusts are 58 mph or greater and/or when there is hail of one inch in diameter or larger. The strongest storms will occur during the late afternoon and early evening hours of Sunday (i.e. between 4pm-9pm is what I am currently thinking). There is the possibility of a few showers and thunderstorms to start on Sunday morning, but it will not be an all day rain event. There will be a low pressure system moving into the area on Sunday. This system could be rather strong and as a result the Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has issued a slight risk for severe weather in our area for Sunday.
