Hawaii Breaks Record for Biggest Hailstone
Hail, well large hail, is somewhat of a rarity in Hawaii. There were no records of a hailstone larger than an inch falling on the state, and only eight reports of hail the size of a penny or a quarter have been recorded. So when a supercell thunderstorm rolled in in early March, the Hawaiians were in for a treat. Numerous reports of hail with diameters of two to three inches were reported. The largest piece of hail recorded was about the size of a grapefruit! As you can see in the picture above it tops out at just over four inches. (Picture courtesy of NOAA)
The storm that formed was odd for the island state and actually looked more like a supercell thunderstorm from the Midwest U.S. The cell that dropped the large hail also produced a EF-0 tornado on Oahu.
