A Full Moon Tonight
Tonight is the 3rd full moon of the year. The moon does not actually emit light, instead the light seen is a reflection of the suns light. When we have a full moon the entire side of the moon facing the earth receives full sunlight. We will have a total of 13 full moons in the year of 2012, which means we will have two in one month. This phenomenon is called a "Blue Moon", and they are rare, hence the term "once is a blue moon". Blue moons don't happen every year but sometimes we can even have two in a single year. 1999 was the last year we had two in one year and it won't be until 2018 that we will see two blue moons in a single year.
So try to enjoy the full moon tonight as we are expecting clear skies, but bundle up since temperatures will be dropping in to the mid 20s.
