Iowa Snow Totals

Here's a look at some of the snow reports from across the state of Iowa so far today...thanks to Iowa Environmental Mesonet.

Snow in the QCA but Severe Storms in Southern IL

Snow and severe thunderstorms both within 200 miles of each other and close to the QCA. A large low pressure system that passed through the QCA yesterday picked up some moisture and warm enough temps to create an unstable environment for the potential for a tornado this morning. Very cold air followed behind allowing for the wrap around moisture to freeze giving us mixed precip and snow in the QCA. At this point no tornado is confirmed with the Storm Prediction Center. Even though forecasters determined the environment was capable of producing a tornado, it may not have formed. The severe storms and snow in such a close vicinity is an example of the abnormal weather we have been experiencing so far this winter.

Snow Forecast Update

After looking at new data this evening it still looks like a very light snow event around the Quad Cities late tonight and early Tuesday. Most places will see about an inch, with close to 2 inches possible north of the QC. Remember though, a bit of light freezing rain is also possible so take it easy on the roads early Tuesday morning!

Light Frz Rain and Light Snow

We're not looking at a powerful winter storm rolling through the area tonight...but it will drop some spotty and light wintry precip. As temps are a little mild today things start off as light rain/drizzle late this evening and then a very little bit of light freezing rain is possible. If we see the icy weather it will be short-lived but could create a few slick spots late tonight before changing over to light snow. Accumulations will be very light...one thing the storm will certainly do is drag down some colder temps for the middle of the week!

More Snow is Coming to the Quad Cities...

If you like the snow, well there's a little bit more headed our way this week! A cold front is going to pass through the Quad Cities Monday afternoon and after the front pushes off to the East we'll pick up a little bit of snow on Tuesday.

Stormcast is showing most neighborhoods picking about an inch of snow (shown above). Some areas to the North of the Quad Cities could pick up a little bit more with smaller amounts South of the QCA.

After Tuesday's snowfall, there is another system that could produce some more accumulating snow by the end of the week. We'll keep you posted!

Snow from 2010 vs This Year's Snowfall So Far...

The Quad Cities finally got a taste of winter this past week! So far this year we've picked up 6.1" of snow. But, last year at this time we had already picked up around 21" of snow!

Check out the snow depth charts for the U.S. The snow depth chart shown above is from last year at this time while the one below is the current snow depth. What a huge difference!!

There are a few chances for snow this week that we are watching so maybe it's going to finally start piling up! We'll keep you posted!

Snowfall Record?

About a week or so ago I had a few people asking whether or not we could break the record for LEAST SNOWIEST WINTER...I said then it was way too early to start thinking that! Theoretically it is still possible, but there's a lot of January and all of February and March to get through. After Thursday's snowstorm here's where we stand...

Quite a Chilly Morning!!

After the first significant of the season, the colder temperatures are sticking around. With temperatures this morning in the teens and wind speeds upwards of 20 mph, wind chills are pretty cold. As we move through the day temperatures will stay in the teens, which means wind chills will stay close to zero thoughout the day!
Luckily tonight the winds slow down to 5-10 mph, but with lows in the single digits, wind chills will be once again be below zero. So stay warm today and tonight!
